Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning recreate Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo 'holding space' meme with 'queer media' journalist
"A Complete Unknown" star Fanning grabbed Chalamet's finger during a new interview with the journalist who launched the "holding space" craze.
Elle Fanning held space for Timothée Chalamet's pointer finger, as the Complete Unknown costars comically recreated Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo's finger-grabbing meme from the Wicked press tour — all in front of the same "queer media" journalist who ignited the "holding space" craze earlier this year.
The pair recently sat down for an interview about the new film with The Advocate's Tracy E. Gilchrist, the reporter who made headlines for her awkward interview with Grande and Erivo that went viral ahead of the musical's release, and both actors expressed shock over the journalist's presence during the press tour.
"I'm starstruck," Fanning said. Chalamet, after extending his finger for Fanning to grab (recalling a heavily meme'd moment from the Grande/Erivo exchange), added: "It's an honor talking to you. I feel sort of starstruck."

"You walk in and I’m like, Tracy? Tracy?" Fanning said before the interview continued. "There’s nothing that we can do that can trump what happened. We can try!"
Gilchrist's statement to Erivo and Grande about fans "holding space" for the lyrics of Wicked's signature song "Defying Gravity" instantly courted both praise and mockery online, with the actresses eventually reacting to the response in a later interview with Variety.

"So I didn't know what any part of it meant," Grande told the publication. "I didn't understand the first sentence. And then I definitely didn't understand what was happening — how you [Erivo] responded. I was like, 'Oh, what did she say? What did you hear?' And I just wanted to be there 'cause I knew something big was happening, and I didn't know how to be there."
Added Erivo: "After a while, I didn't know how to be there."
