Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears Adds Jenna Elfman in Recurring Role
Jenna Elfman is coming home to ABC — and returning to her sitcom roots.
The Dharma & Greg (and Imaginary Mary) star is set to recur opposite Tim Allen on the upcoming ABC comedy Shifting Gears, our sister site Deadline reports.

The half-hour comedy stars the Home Improvement and Last Man Standing vet as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of Parker Customs, a classic car restoration shop,” according to the official logline. “When Matt’s estranged daughter (played by 2 Broke Girls’ Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
Per Deadline, Elfman will play Eve Drake, “a spirited choreographer and owner of the dance studio across from Parker Customs.” (Hmm… might she play Allen’s love interest?)
Joining Allen, Dennings and Elfman are Seann William Scott (American Pie) as Gabriel, a family friend who works at the shop with Matt; Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (NCIS: New Orleans) as Stitch, a former Marine and fellow mechanic; and Maxwell Simkins (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers) and newcomer Barrett Margolis co-star as Dennings’ TV kids, Carter and Georgia.
As previously reported, Michelle Nader, who served as showrunner on Dennings’ last two shows — CBS’ 2 Broke Girls and Hulu’s Dollface — will serve in that same capacity on Shifting Gears. Season 1 premieres Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at 8/7c, where it will lead into the midseason return of Abbott Elementary (now airing at 8:30 pm; see ABC’s full winter schedule here).
Since Dharma & Greg, Elfman has headlined comedies Accidentally on Purpose and Imaginary Mary, and for five seasons co-starred on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead. Following a guest spot on ABC’s Will Trent earlier this year, she’ll next be seen in Season 3 of the acclaimed AMC drama Dark Winds.
