The Pointer Sisters star Anita Pointer dies aged 74: 'Deeply saddened'
The singer passed away at her Beverly Hills home on Saturday.
Anita Pointer, a founding member of the Grammy-award-winning girl group The Pointer Sisters, has died of cancer at the age of 74.
The singer passed away at her Beverly Hills home on Saturday surrounded by her family, her publicist Roger Neal said.
Her family said in a statement: “While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we are comforted in knowing she is now with her daughter Jada and her sisters June and Bonnie and at peace.
“She was the one that kept all of us close and together for so long. Her love of our family will live on in each of us.”

The Pointer Sisters, best known for their hit songs He’s So Shy, Jump (For My Love) and I’m So Excited, were formed in Oakland, California and achieved success in the 1970s and 1980s. They won three Grammy Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and scored 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985.
Ruth Pointer is the only surviving sister in the group after June died from cancer in 2006 at the age of 52 and Bonnie died in 2020 at 69.
Following the untimely death of Anita’s only child Jada in 2003, who died from cancer at 37, Anita began raising her granddaughter Roxie McKain Pointer.
Anita stepped back from performing with the Pointer Sisters in 2015 due to ill health and went on to release a book, Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters' Family Story, in 2020.
In 2021 she was supposed to be a contestant on The Masked Singer US with her sister Ruth but had to pull out due to some health issues.
The Pointer Sisters have since continued touring, with Ruth performing alongside her daughter Issa and granddaughter Sadako.
