Tate McRae Lands Her First No. 1 Album With ‘So Close to What’
Tate McRae is the leading lady of the albums chart this week as her latest effort, “So Close to What,” debuts at No. 1 in the United States. Not only is this the reigning pop star’s first No. 1 LP, and third full-length release overall, but McRae also enters the chart with biggest opening numbers for a woman artist this year.
The 15-song project makes its entrance atop the Billboard 200 with 177,000 equivalent album units earned, according to Luminate. The record was introduced with three singles: “2 Hands,” “Sports Car” and “It’s OK I’m OK,” with the latter being the highest-charting on the Hot 100 at No. 20.

McRae scored 137 streams with “So Close to What,” the biggest streaming week of her career, and 71,000 sales, also a career-best. With “So Close to What” logging a total of 177,000 equivalent album units, it is the biggest debut week for a studio album by a woman since Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” entered with 362,000 units in September. (On this week’s chart, “Short n’ Sweet” is at No. 5.)
The Canadian artist appeared on “Saturday Night Live” on March 1 to sing “Dear God,” and her viral smash, “Sports Car,” which she performed alongside a team of male dancers. She was introduced by host and comedian, Shane Gillis.
“So Close to What” is the only new release on the albums chart this week. Drake and PartyNextDoor’s “$ome $exy $ongs,” which name checks McRae on the song “Small Town Fame” (“Bitch, I feel like Tate McRae“), slips to No. 2 following its No. 1 debut last weekend. The rap and R&B album logged 119,000 units in its second week.
Kendrick Lamar’s “GNX” is still at No. 3; SZA’s “SOS” keeps at No. 4; Bad Bunny’s “Debí Tirar Más Fotos” is at No. 6; and the Weeknd’s “Hurry Up Tomorrow” slips to No. 7. Meanwhile, Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” is at No. 8, Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” is at No. 9, and Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft” rounds out the top at No. 10.
