Sweet Therapy Ponies Bring Joy to Brighten Hospital Patients' Days

Animals have a unique way of lifting human spirits. Without even trying, their presence can help lighten even the heaviest mood. This is especially true for people suffering from an illness or an extended hospital stay.

While we often consider dogs the ultimate therapy animal, other creatures are equally terrific in this role. These ponies are an excellent example. Check out this August 7 video to see them in action.

What a wonderful thing to do for a stranger! If you or someone you love has ever spent time in the hospital, you know how difficult it can be. The days are long and painful; for many, it can feel like they may never get out. That’s why having a visitor who is there to brighten their day is such an incredible gift. The moment Dinks (@dinkyponies) walks up to this patient, her entire mood changes. She’s clearly overwhelmed by the unexpected sight of a beautiful pony inside her hospital room. How lovely is that? Although modern medicine might not measure these animals’ impact on health, animal lovers know how immeasurable their healing can be. It takes a special person like Sarah to dedicate their time to training these creatures and volunteer to bring them into these spaces with their uplifting presence.

Animals Used for Therapy

Dogs are often used in various therapeutic settings because of their natural ability to bond with humans and reduce anxiety. Therapy cats can also have a calming effect on patients, especially when they purr and make biscuits. Horses and ponies can also be profoundly therapeutic, as they are often thought to absorb the pain and suffering of humans. Less common as service animals are birds, rabbits, monkeys, and guinea pigs, but they can all put a smile on a stranger’s face. Even pigs, alpacas, and llamas can all be trained to offer emotional support and bring endless joy.

This exceptional volunteer work touched people. One person shared, “This is better than any medicine a doctor can give you. It’s just pure healing, love, compassion, kindness. It warms the soul, soothes the heart, and makes you feel better. True medicine.” That’s for sure. Viewer @dianelumadue responded, “The gift of compassion means so much to those unable to live independently for whatever reason. Her emotions are truly genuine and overwhelming.” It’s truly powerful to see what a difference kindness can make.

Although we may not have ponies or the time to volunteer, we can all make an effort to be nice to each other. A simple smile, a compliment, or words of encouragement can make an equally enormous difference in someone’s day.
