The Supersmart Kitchen Towel Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner
Kitchen hacks and tricks are my jam! There’s something so satisfying about discovering a new way to use everyday objects that makes cooking (and cleaning up) easier or more fun. Whether it’s repurposing tools, saving time or reducing waste, I’m all about those “Why didn’t I think of that?” moments.
I love using a muffin tin to organize toppings for taco night and keeping brown sugar soft by adding a marshmallow to the container. I blew my sister's mind by freezing leftover herbs in olive oil in an ice cube tray for quick flavor bombs to cook with, and of course, there are all the ways to keep apples from browning.
But one thing I use most in my kitchen is a towel and I have issues keeping it from falling on the floor—or rather, my kids do! Beyond drying dishes, a good towel can be placed under your cutting board to prevent it from slipping while you chop. Use it to cover bread dough while it rises or to squeeze out excess moisture from grated veggies for crispy fritters. You can even dampen it and drape it over the bowl of greens you’re washing to keep them fresh and crisp.
All of these require that towels stay clean, and that means they need to stay in place. That's why I love this hack from content creator Emy Lee (@emyxbudgetsahm) that shows how you can do a simple sewing project to keep your towels from falling off the handle of your stove and hitting the ground.

How to Make Hanging Kitchen Towels
Emy said that people always ask about the hanging towels she has in her kitchen, so she shared the details on Instagram and TikTok.
"My husband turns regular towels into hanging ones by doing a quick DIY project!" she said. Seriously, it's very quick. It took her husband about five minutes to make one.
She showed how he makes these cool towels in an Instagram video, so you can check that out for a full tutorial, but the basic idea is to draw a small, thin rectangle near the top of the towel, sew around the shape, then cut a line in the fabric in the center of the rectangle, creating a slot. Emy's husband used a ruler, fabric chalk and a sewing machine to make the towel, but you can be as precise or loose as you want when DIYing this handy towel.
That slot is the key to the hanging towel. You simply Drape the towel over the handle of your oven before you pull it through the hole, the loop will go over the handle, allowing the towel to hang on the stove and stay in place. How smart!

You Can Buy Them, Too
If you're like me and you don't have time or patience to sew this, you can buy them. Amazon sells a lot of styles, and even Home Depot has some that hang on a small hook.
I personally like the crochet-style hanging towels because they go with the vintage look in my kitchen, but you can get these hanging towels in various colors and patterns.
Or you can save money and whip up a few for yourself the way Emy's husband does. Either way, a hanging kitchen towel is a game changer and keeps those towels off the floor!
