Steve Bannon’s Trump 2028 Taunt Has Seth Meyers Worried
Speaking at an event for the New York Young Republican Club on Sunday, pro-Trump political strategist Steve Bannon proposed the idea of Donald Trump running for a third term.
“Since it doesn’t actually say consecutive, I don’t know, maybe we do it again in ’28,” Bannon said, to an audience cheers. “Are you guys down for that? Trump ’28!”
In his “Closer Look” segment Monday, Seth Meyers gave his response to the clip:
“First of all, ‘Trump 28’ sounds like his golf score when he cheats,” he said. He then added, “Now, this is an obvious troll from Bannon, but then again, they’re always trolling until they’re not.”
Meyers explained, “Republicans are like guys who jokingly propose a three-way with their wife and her best friend. ‘I mean, that’d be so crazy, right? I mean, unless you’re into it…’”
Bannon’s comments come not long after Trump himself joked about serving an unconstitutional third term.
Legal scholars have dismissed the idea, pointing out that the language in the 22nd amendment is nowhere near as ambiguous as Bannon made it out to be.
“No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice,” the Constitution reads, placing no importance on whether those elections were consecutive or separate.
Of course, it’s understandable why Seth Meyers, who’s long criticized Trump for disrespecting the Constitution, might still be worried about Trump finding a way around this amendment.
For now, however, the Late Night host’s less concerned with a potential third term than he is with surviving Trump’s second one.
After briefly covering Trump’s response to the ongoing drone mystery on the East Coast, Meyers lamented about Trump, “I can’t believe we have another four years of this f---ing drone.”
