With the likes of the Duchess of Cambridge, Oprah Winfrey and Kate Moss as fans, we’re inclined to listen when designer Stella McCartney offers fashion advice.

Her latest guidance, though, pertains to our dirty laundry and it might raise a few eyebrows.

She’s argued that it’s better to simply brush the dirt from your clothes rather than putting the garments in the wash.

“I’m not a fan of dry cleaning, or any cleaning really. You let the dirt dry and you brush it off,” Stella admitted in a recent interview with The Observer.

The fashion designer is famous for her approach to sustainability. Last year, the brand launched the World Of Sustainability, a platform which highlights the sustainable practices of the label.

It seems her advice is backed by her experience. She learned her trade amongst tailors on Savile Row, which highlighted how beneficial the avoidance of cleaning clothing can be.

“Basically, in life, rule of thumb: if you don’t absolutely have to clean anything, don’t clean it,” she explained.

“I wouldn’t change my bra every day and I don’t just chuck stuff into a washing machine because it’s been worn.”

Stella McCartney isn’t the only one who seldom washes her clothes. Levi’s CEO and President Chip Bergh doesn’t believe in washing jeans, ever.

In 2014 he admitted to never washing his decade-old jeans.

Although the thought of never doing the washing again is a tempting one, it can be argued that fashion’s royalty have failed to take the day-to-day uses of clothing into consideration.

From sweating at work to sitting in a packed commuter train, the hygiene factors associated with simply brushing down your clothes can’t be ignored.
