Spirit Halloween Slams “SNL”'s Season Premiere Sketch Mocking the Chain: 'Irrelevant 50-Year-Old TV Show'

Spirit Halloween had a scary good response to Saturday Night Live's parody of the chain.

During the season 50 premiere of Saturday Night Live on Sept. 28, the long-running sketch comedy show poked fun at Spirit Halloween and its ephemeral nature. The tongue-in-cheek skit appears to be an uplifting commercial, painting the retailer as a business to turn around "dead-end" communities and joking about its products.

The Halloween chain responded to the parody on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday, Sept. 30. "We are great at raising things back from the dead @nbcsnl," they said, featuring an image of a Spirit Halloween-themed SNL costume, an "irrelevant 50-year-old TV show."

The "costume" included "dated references," "unknown cast members," and "shrinking ratings."

"We don't see a dead-end town. We don't see an abandoned Kmart. We see a spirit, a Spirit Halloween," cast members narrate. "Since 1983, Spirit Halloween has been helping our struggling communities by setting up shop in every vacant building in the country for six weeks and then bouncing."

"And thanks to us, what used to be a condemned AutoZone where a murder happened is once again a thriving business... where a murder happened."

The sketch show also poked fun at the products that customers could purchase, including "wigs that give you a rash, single-use fog machines, and costumes of famous characters tweaked just enough to avoid a lawsuit."

At one point, a young customer asks for a Taylor Swift costume and receives one labeled "blonde singing woman." Close enough!
