To say that Sofia Vergara was dedicated while playing Griselda Blanco in Netflix's miniseries, Griselda, would be an understatement. In addition to showing off some of her most serious acting chops to date, Vergara had to conceal her figure in order to bring the infamous drug lord to life.

Speaking with Variety about the role, Vergara noted that the real life Griselda Blanco was not a true beauty queen.

"She was maybe not a Barbie doll, but the real Griselda Blanco had something—she had some kind of sex appeal that I needed to show,” she told the outlet, noting that she tried extremely hard to make sure none of her natural essence shone through.

“I didn’t want the bouncing that is natural for Latin women to show. I would have to wrap myself so that my butt wouldn’t jiggle. I had to wear a really bad bra," Vergara explained. "I had to cover my arms, because I have very skinny arms, and you don’t look threatening when you have this stupid little arm.”

Vergara's transformation wasn't just down to wardrobe choices either—Variety revealed that the actress had to undergo three hours of hair and makeup, with her spending a hour-and-a-half on her face and prosthetics, and the next hour-and-a-half on applying the wig and body makeup. The end result ultimately ended up being worth it, as the Modern Family star earned her a nomination at the 2024 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work in Griselda, making her the second Latin actress, ever, to earn a nod.

"Griselda was my first dramatic role ever, and it took us 15 years to bring her to life. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who was a part of this series. I could have never done this without my director Andres Baiz, my costar @el_guerra , @ericnewmanofficial and the full creative team, my partner and producer @luisbalaguer1, @tedsarandos, @belabaj, and their team at @Netflix, and all of the amazing cast and crew," she wrote on Instagram after receiving the news. "I never dreamed that after “Modern Family” I would be able to be a part of something as special as “Griselda.” I’m honored to be recognized alongside Jodi, Brie, Juno, and Naomi, incredible women who gave us incredible TV this year. Thank you to the television academy for this incredible honor!"
