‘SNL’s Marcello Hernandez Can’t Stop Laughing During Ridiculous Weekend Update Bit
Marcello Hernandez is quickly becoming one of SNL’s standout stars. Although he’s appeared on the show since 2022, this season marks his first as a repertory cast member, and it’s easy to see why he was promoted. In the few years he’s been on the show, Hernandez already has a handful of memorable characters under his belt, including the star of the mega-viral “Bridesmaids” sketch, Domingo. This character was born in Ariana Grande’s episode earlier this season, showed up again in a sequel sketch starring Charli XCX, and got what appeared to be a final send-off with Bad Bunny and Pedro Pascal during the SNL50 anniversary special.
Adding to his repertoire of characters, Marcello rolled into the Weekend Update desk as “The Movie Guy,” a young man in an old-timey ticket-taker uniform who claims to have predictions of who will win this year's Oscars. From the very beginning of the segment, Hernandez has a chuckling lilt in his voice that only increases as it becomes more and more obvious that his Oscar predictions may not be so trustworthy. “A Complete Unknown,” he begins, “This movie is a complete unknown to me because I didn’t see this one.”
Later on, when he’s meant to discuss Best Picture nominee Conclave, all he can muster through his giggles is, “This movie has to be about the pope, right?” The laughter is infectious and likely stems from the character’s sometimes-indiscernible accent and his nonsensical tangents about Sponge Bob Squarepants and Popeye the Sailor Man. Marcello is fighting for his life in the best way possible as Colin Jost confronts him, “You call yourself the movie guy, but it seems like you’re more interested in talking about Spongebob.” Even Jost is having a hard time delivering his lines. As ridiculous and baffling as the segment may be, SNL is always at its best when the show’s cast members are having fun. Judging by the amount of stifled laughter that happened on stage this weekend, it’s safe to say fun was had by all, especially the audience.
