“Late Show” won’t air new episodes due to Stephen Colbert’s ruptured appendix

"Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas," the host joked.

The Late Show is taking a brief pause due to Stephen Colbert’s health.

“Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” the host wrote in a message on Threads. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”

Colbert was set to interview Barbra Streisand, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Garner, Baz Luhrmann, and Kelsey Grammer this week.

The show also previously missed a week of new episodes as the host recovered from COVID-19 last month.

Last week, The Late Show made history when David Letterman, the show’s original host, returned as a guest for the first time since departing the show in 2015. “I miss everything,” Letterman said of the series. “I mean, mostly, it’s fun. Very few things in life provide one the opportunity — and I can’t speak for you or to you on this topic — but for me, if you muck one up, 24 hours later, you get to try again. And that’s a pretty good device.”

Earlier this month, CBS announced another shakeup to its late-night programming: Taylor Tomlinson will host a new show, After Midnight, in the secondary slot that James Corden’s Late Late Show previously occupied. The show is based on Comedy Central’s @Midnight, which was hosted by Chris Hardwick from 2013 to 2017.
