Shoppers Say Costco’s 'Tasty' New Treat Is the 'Best I've Ever Had'

When traveling around the world, chances are high that you’ll discover something that is not readily available back home. This is especially true when it comes to food. Here in the States, we are lucky enough to have a wide variety of worldly cuisine available at our disposal. But there are plenty of dishes that either need to be made from scratch or require a trip back to the source in order to enjoy them for ourselves.

On a recent trip to Costco, Reddit user @KahlenKory discovered a flaky puff pastry offering that they claim caused them to “fall to the cold, concrete Costco floor.” The treat in question? La Vie Gormand’s Pastel de Nata Portuguese Custard Tarts, a take on Pastéis de Belém—a fan-favorite Portuguese puff pastry that was once named one of the 50 Best Things to Eat In the World. Kahlen described first trying Pastéis de Belém while visiting Lisbon, and instantly fell in love with the soft and flaky texture of the authentically sweet treat.

Pastel de Nata is advertised as “a light and flaky puff pastry shell filled with a rich and creamy egg custard” and comes in a 38.1-ounce, 18-count box for somewhere around $5 to $6, depending on location. Fans of this authentic Portuguese pastry describe it as both “excellent” and “amazing,” with some claiming to even enjoy sprinkling a bit of sugar on top and caramelizing the sugar with a torch.

Upon trying Costco’s latest offering, Kahlen shared with Redditors that the pastry immediately "transported” them “back to that garden square” when they first sunk their “smackers into that delicately flakey pastry filled with silky rich vanilla custard.” Any baked treat that can summon such memories of a wonderful international trip is immediately a winner in our book. Kahlen goes on to remind viewers of the saying “nothing can substitute the real thing,” while also claiming that “these are so damn close.”

For a little more background on the pastry, Pastel de Nata translates to “cream pastries” in Portuguese, the name of which describes the velvety texture of the dish. Pastel de Nata was developed in a monastery west of Lisbon over 300 years ago by monks who used sugar and a surplus of egg yolks to make it. The extra egg yolks stemmed, of course, from the popular use of egg whites while laundering clothes at the time.

As of now, the exact warehouse locations stocking Pastel De Nata is not entirely clear, however, we assume Costco locations nationwide might start to see some boxes appear in the coming weeks. If you happen to get your hands on a box, keep in mind that leftovers can be stored at room temperature for up to two days and reheated at 350°F in the oven for best results. Additionally, leftovers can be stored in the freezer using an air tight container for more than a month.
