‘Shogun’ Co-Creator Justin Marks Inks New Overall Deal at FX

Justin Marks is staying in business with FX, with the “Shogun” co-creator signing a new TV overall deal with FX Productions.

Under the deal, Marks will develop new projects for FX, including the potential new seasons of “Shogun” reported to be in the works back in May. Marks is developing those new seasons with his fellow co-creator and wife, Rachel Kondo.

“It is an honor to have Justin as part of the FX family,” said Gina Balian, president of FX Entertainment. “He is a gifted storyteller who is tireless in his commitment to doing the best possible work. His dedication is in every frame of ‘Shōgun’ and we are delighted to be continuing our relationship with him as we forge new stories to share with the world.”

“Shogun” is based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell. The series proved to be a hit with audiences and critics alike upon its debut earlier this year. The show set a record with its 18 Emmy Award wins, marking the most wins for a series in a single season. That included wins for best drama series, best actor in a drama series (Hiroyuki Sanada), and best actress in a drama series (Anna Sawai).

The potential new seasons of the series are being developed in partnership with Clavell’s estate.

“It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to spend the last five years at FX,” said Marks. “From the production team to the brilliant marketing and publicity apparatus, I feel like FX has become our extended family. I can think of nothing better than to continue collaborating with John, Gina, Nick, Kate, Lindsay and the rest of the team at FX, not to mention the entire Disney Television team led by Dana, Eric and so many other brilliant partners. It’s a rare thing to find partners who challenge you as much as they support you. I can’t wait to see where this road takes us next.”

Marks’ other TV credits include creating the Starz series “Counterpart,” which starred J.K. Simmons and ran for two seasons. In film, Marks received an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay for his work on the film “Top Gun: Maverick.” He also wrote the screenplay for Disney’s live-action adaptation of “The Jungle Book” in 2016.

Marks is repped by CAA, Lit Entertainment Group, and Lichter Grossman.
