Woman breaks down on TikTok after being told to leave gym over top

A woman has shared her shock and embarrassment after being asked to leave the gym mid-workout over the sports bra she was wearing.

In a video on TikTok, user @shelby.bellz broke down in tears in her car after the incident, revealing she believed it had more to do with her size than what she was wearing.

“I just went to the gym and the lady at the front desk said that they have a policy, you’re not allowed to wear sports bras to the gym, that you can’t be showing your belly,” Shelby, who is from the US, explains in the video.

“She said, ‘It’s fine for this time,’ but just so you know for next time."

She then pans the camera to show what she was wearing, a black crop and leggings combo that showed a tiny bit of her stomach.

“I’m 15 minutes in on the treadmill and the program co-ordinator came up to me and asked me to leave,” she then adds, before bursting into tears.

“I’m so embarrassed.”

The video sparked a heated debate between Shelby's followers, with many sharing their support for her, but others standing by the gym's right to have a dress code.

However, in a subsequent video, she explained the situation further to reveal why she believed it was "problematic" and an instance of "fat-shaming".

“The dress code is what it is, I can’t change that, whatever," she explained, going through two key issues she had.

“But number one is how the lady at the front desk spoke to me. I said, ‘Oh we’re not allowed to wear a sports bra?’ And she said, ‘Well we can’t just have our bellies hanging out,’ in a belittling tone.

“That already is not OK.”

Her second issue was with the fact she was told it would be ok in this instance, before then being told to leave mid-way through her workout.

"I went into the gym with my wrist band on that she gave me … then to have somebody come up to me, after I’d already been there 15 minutes, sweat pouring down my face," she said.

In another later video she also said she believes her size played a part.

“I genuinely believe that if that was a smaller woman standing there at the counter that they would not have said that to her," she said.

Shelby received plenty of support from others in the comments, believing she had every right to feel 'hurt'.

"Time for a new gym honey, I'm so sorry that happened to you," one person wrote.

"So sorry. This isn't right," another agreed.

It comes after another woman was forced to change out of her 'inappropriate' top during a visit to Disney World.

Alyssa Schuller also shared a video to TikTok which showed a staff member escorting her to get a T-shirt in order to cover up the top she was wearing to the park.
