Only One Thing Gave Seth Meyers Hope in Trump’s First Week

Seth Meyers talking about Trump and Rev. Budde

Seth Meyers ripped into the GOP for their recent attacks on Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, who made a heartfelt plea directly to Donald Trump during a sermon Tuesday.

In his “Closer Look” segment Thursday, Meyers covered the situation, and still managed to maintain some optimism despite Trump’s complete rejection of Budde’s plea. Budde asked Trump to “have mercy” to LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities, and GOP pundits like Laura Ingraham responded by calling her “a lunatic.”

“So, violent criminals who try to overthrow the government are the recipients of Trump’s mercy,” Meyers said, “But when you ask him to show mercy to literally anyone else, especially the most vulnerable among us, he and his allies in the right-wing media all lose their s--t.”

Meyers showed a Truth Social post from Trump complaining that Budde was “nasty in tone” and “boring and uninspiring.”

“First of all, you’re complaining that it was boring?” Meyers replied. “It’s church. You want the bishop to dance to Ave Maria with a katana in her hand?”

The Late Night host continued, “Second, if you think a member of the clergy asking the most powerful person on Earth to have mercy on marginalized people is woke or radical left, that might be a good sign that you’re a sociopath.”

Meyers, who has tried to maintain a defiantly upbeat, productive tone to his commentary since Trump won the 2024 election, ended the monologue on an optimistic note:

“Republicans may have unified control of government and they may have the richest and powerful oligarchs on their side,” Meyers noted, “But there are still people willing to confront them to their faces.”

“And when that happens, Trump and his ilk immediately melt down,” Meyers said. “They still can’t handle the slightest disagreement or pushback.”
