Selena Gomez Pokes Fun at Co-Stars Steve Martin and Martin Short After Both Skipped SAG Awards
“You know, they don’t really care,” Gomez said of her "Only Murders in the Building" co-stars.
Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building had a banner night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night, winning every category they were nominated in, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
Selena Gomez, wearing a navy Celine gown, was in attendance at the February 23 ceremony, but co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short were MIA—which Gomez poked fun at while accepting the award onstage.
“Wait, we never win,” she started her speech. “This is so weird.”
“Okay, well, Marty and Steve aren’t here. You know, they don’t really care,” she playfully continued. "But I just—I don’t know what to say.”
After co-star Richard Kind suggested she thank Martin and Short, she did just that, adding, “Oh, and thank you to Marty and Steve. They raised me.”
She continued, “I genuinely am just so grateful. Everybody, the writers—everyone deserves this. I take it home for all of us and I’m bringing this back to New York for season five.”
Other nominees in the category were Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Shrinking, and The Bear.
For what it’s worth, Short had a valid reason for skipping the awards ceremony—Martin previously revealed that Short contracted COVID while attending the SNL50 special one week prior, on February 16 in New York City. Before the Only Murders in the Building cast won the aforementioned ensemble award, Short won his first SAG Award at the age of 74, Deadline reported, taking home the win in the Male Actor in a Comedy Series category in absentia.
“The honor of being in Only Murders In The Building is the most spectacular compliment anyone could be given,” Short said in a statement after his win. “The honor of being awarded by your peers is even greater. Thank you so so much.”
Per Deadline, Martin was unable to travel to Los Angeles and the SAG Awards “due to a previous conflict in his schedule.”
Both Martin and Short have previously gushed about co-star Gomez in the past, with Martin telling People, “We didn't really know Selena, we didn't know what we're getting into. I knew she has a fabulous personality, she's very smart. But she is never late,” which Martin said was “a very big deal” on sets.
For his part, Short said of his friendship with Gomez, “I think it just gets deeper and deeper and deeper. She is so lovely as a human, she's so remarkable as a talent, and she just has an aura and this lovely spirit. Our friendship grows and grows.”
