Selena Gomez Makes Vulnerable Health Admission About Having Kids

For years, Selena Gomez has been open with fans about her health struggles. Now she's revealing how her ongoing "medical issues" affect her ability to have children.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair where the 32-year-old actress spoke about her new movie Emilia Pérez and hit show Only Murders in the Building, Gomez shared that she wanted to start a family before the age of 35.

“Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Okay, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.’” Gomez went on to explain that she'd always been open to the idea of adoption, partly because her mother had been adopted. Then she made a surprising admission.

“I haven’t ever said this,” Gomez began, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Still, Gomez seemed to be at peace with her reality.

“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” she continued. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. [But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me. It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Gomez, who is currently dating musician Benny Blanco, was diagnosed with the chronic autoimmune illness lupus in 2013 while on her first solo tour, Stars Dance. After nearly 60 shows, she was forced to cancel the rest of the dates, later undergoing chemotherapy. In 2017, Gomez shared news of her kidney transplant on Instagram. Her friend, actor Francia Raísa, donated the organ.
