Sean McVay confusingly evasive on whether Todd Gurley will go to Hawaii with Rams

Before training camp began last month, Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley told NFL Network, “It’s good, man. It’s good,” when asked about his mysterious left knee.

After being held out of offseason workouts, Gurley’s reps in camp have been closely monitored, and he isn’t expected to play in the preseason – though that’s true for most of the Rams’ top players.

On Tuesday, however, coach Sean McVay gave a truly confusing answer when asked about Gurley and the team’s trip to Hawaii for an exhibition game with the Dallas Cowboys.

‘I don’t have the full answer’

Here’s the transcript of McVay’s exchange with media when asked about Gurley:

On Gurley traveling to Hawaii:

“That’s something that I would say, more likely than not, but we’re still working through the specifics of that as we kind of get closer and closer to that. I don’t have the full answer, but more likely than not, he will not go.”

Full answer? Isn’t it just yes or no?

On the reasons why Gurley wouldn’t make the trip:

“There’s a lot of layers to it. I think it’s really just figuring out from an organizational standpoint, talking to the players, making sure that we’re in alignment with doing things the right way. Most importantly, what we want to do is always look out for players and what’s in their best interest and that’s something that we’ll have more clarification as we get closer to that trip. I said Tuesday, but it’ll be a little bit closer to when we head out.”

What?

Whether the length of the flight is part of the reason Gurley wouldn’t travel:

“I think it’s something that we’ll talk about. That’s definitely part of the discussion, but figuring out the nuances and all the little details is something that we’re kind of working through as an organization right now.”

Again: how is that not yes or no? Not many of us like being on 6-hour flights, and it’s worse when you have a leg injury that could cramp up, make you uncomfortable or otherwise be negatively impacted. That makes sense.

Los Angeles needs Gurley in September and November and January, not August; reasonable people understand that.
