For years, I wrote off LED and red light therapy face masks as just another gimmick in the ever-growing beauty tech world—and then I actually read the science. Oops, my bad.

If you’re not familiar with the history of LED (light-emitting diodes), allow me to (very briefly) break it down. The benefits of this therapy have been studied for decades, thanks to NASA. Back in the 1980s, NASA conducted experiments to see how light affects plant growth in space. They discovered that certain wavelengths, particularly red light, helped plants thrive. This led to the creation of LEDs that could emit specific wavelengths for different uses. Fast forward to the ‘90s, and scientists began exploring how these wavelengths could affect wound healing. Spoiler alert: they were impressed.

Since the early 2000s, medical and dermatologic research has found more and more uses for LED therapy (again, especially red light) in aesthetic dermatology. Think: tackling fine lines, speeding up wound healing, and preventing scars. By 2025, you’d be hard-pressed to find a dermatologist, aesthetician, or plastic surgeon who doesn’t rave about red light therapy’s complexion-boosting powers.

Take me, for example. This past summer, I was cut by a piece of glass in a minor fender bender and, naturally, freaked out about the potential scar. After diving into research and speed-dialing my roster of trusted skin experts, I decided to go all in on daily red light therapy to prevent scarring (I also used an exosome serum for 28 days post-accident, but that’s another story that you can read here). Fast-forward six weeks, and the scar? Gone. Completely undetectable. As a bonus, my skin was less red, firmer, and had an overall glow I didn’t think was possible without an all-expensed paid vacation to St. Barth or copious amount of liquid highlighter. Even my pre-jowls were looking a little smoother.

After experiencing the magic of red light therapy firsthand (and taking a couple of months off just to see what happens when you stop using the mask), I knew it was time to make it a permanent part of my routine. Luckily, the launch of CurrentBody’s LED Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 2 came just in time—and I was lucky enough to snag a sample.

For context, I’ve tried at least six or seven different LED face masks over the years, many of which I’ve loved—including CurrentBody’s original Series One, which became a cult favorite during the pandemic in 2020 (and got a special cameo in Emily in Paris, of course). While the Series 1 is still an amazing tool, the Series 2 takes things to the next level with impressive upgrades that justify the slightly higher price.

The Series 2 boasts 236 LED lights and three clinically proven wavelengths—red (633nm), near-infrared (830nm), and the new deep near-infrared (1072nm). I’m not sure whether it’s the extra lights or the triple-threat wavelength combo, but the most obvious thing I noticed with this new LED mask is just how insanely bright the lights are. And yes, this is a good thing. It’s so bright that even with the eye cutouts, it’s tough to read or type on my phone or computer. This is a clear sign the lights are highly effective, and probably even more so than some of its dimmer competitors in the saturated LED space.

What sets the CurrentBody Series 2 apart, though, is the design. The “liquid” silicone mask provides a custom fit, and its expanded shape means more of your face gets the benefits—hello, nose, lips, and chin! It also features a new multiway strap that keeps the mask snug for the full ten-minute treatment—even if you’re walking on the treadmill, doing the dishes, or handling chores. Honestly, I love that I can multitask without having to readjust the mask every 30 seconds, as is often the case with other LED masks.

But the real draw of the CurrentBody Series 2 Mask is how quickly I saw results. While the brand promises visible changes in as little as four weeks, I saw reduced redness and discoloration in just 10 to 14 days. And after just one use, my skin had an instant glow—something I’ve never experienced with other masks on the market.

If you’re still skeptical about red light therapy, trust me—CurrentBody’s Red Light Therapy Mask Series 2 will make you a believer—especially since it doesn’t require months to see results.
