Sam Heughan Faces Backlash for Seemingly Innocent Soccer Post

Sam Heughan

Sam Heughan didn't mean to, but it looks like he's got some "soccer" fans all riled up.

The Outlander star, 43, was just sharing some Instagram footage from a recent visit to Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, to watch a soccer match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin—but he made one unforgivable mistake in his caption.

The U.K.-born actor referred to the game as soccer, rather than football, which is usually the standard term for the sport in European nations.

"Soccer??? c’mon big man 🤣," one of his followers playfully teased in the comments, while another person added, "Soccer??????????? Have a word son."

"My ears hurt. It's football lovely Sam," someone else reminded him.

Another slightly more aggressive commenter chimed in to say, "THS IS FOOTBALLLLLLLL."

However, Heughan did try to defend himself while replying to one commenter, "don’t want to confuse my transatlantic friends 😉."

But using the word "soccer" wasn't the only thing his fans found wrong with the post, as many followers were upset with Heughan rooting for Bayern Munich.

"Nice to have you here in Germany, but sorry, wrong team. 😉," one user stressed to Heughan, as another commented, "FC Bayern, no go, sorry. 😢"

""Noooooooo! Sorry, Sam, that's horrible!!!! Not Bayern!!! 😂😭😭😭😭😭🤣," someone else lamented.

Regardless of how some of his fans felt about it, Heughan seemed to have a great time attending the game, giving a shoutout to Audi for giving him the great seats.

"Thank you @audi for the amazing soccer experience @allianzarena ⚽️,"  he wrote in his caption. "Lucky to witness @fcbayern win at home! 🙌."
