Greatness recognizes greatness.

From their trailer on the set of Michelob Ultra's Super Bowl LIX ad, WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu and NFL legend Randy Moss share praise for one another in exclusive interviews with PEOPLE.

"Obviously, Randy is one of the greatest athletes to play football," says 2025 WNBA champion Ionescu, 27. "Being able to see who he is off the field and off the TV screen, and just being able to talk to him about what motivates him, what's helped him in his career, is exciting."

Moss, 47, tells PEOPLE he followed Ionescu's career throughout college. "It was just special to get to know her and to meet her," the hall-of-famer says from his trailer in Calabasas, Calif. between takes.

"She's just come off a f---ing WNBA championship," Moss continues. "You know what I'm saying? So she could have easily been, 'Hey, Randy. I'm the champion.' I'm like, 'Okay.' So she broke the ice or I broke the ice and I met her husband and it was just great."

Moss says Ionescu's "greatness" is reflected in her "mentality" and how she approaches the game.

"I was very intrigued before I met her, just like, how she was going to be, what type of answers she was going to give me. You get around people sometimes and you ask questions and they're short with their answer. But with her, it was just more of seeing why she's great."

Ionescu, who added a WNBA Championship and an Olympic gold medal to her resumé in 2024, and Moss were only on set for their Michelob Ultra shoot for one day, but Moss says, "It was a lot in a short period of time of me and her getting to know each other, and it was great, man. I really enjoyed coming to this."

Moss retired in 2012 after playing 14 seasons in the NFL. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame six years later. He previously starred in a Super Bowl ad with Frito Lays.

In December 2024, Moss announced he was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery on Thanksgiving, roughly one week after filming the commercial with Ionescu.

The Michelob Ultra ad — which also stars Willem Dafoe and Catherine O'Hara — will be Ionescu's first spot to air during the coveted Super Bowl slot, and the WNBA champ says she's honored to be a part of it.

"It's the biggest sporting event," she says from her trailer on set, sitting next to her husband Hroniss Grasu. "It's really fun and exciting. Randy and I have talked about how cool it is as athletes to be able to have this opportunity and be here together and be on this campaign."
