Sabrina Carpenter Recreated One of Madonna's Most Iconic Looks for the VMAs
She's working late 'cause she's a fashion icon.
After a monumental summer, Sabrina Carpenter is well on her way to becoming a pop icon, and the singer—who is working not just late, but overtime—just channeled another music legend with her 2024 MTV VMAs look. On Wednesday, the star stepped onto the black carpet in a vintage Bob Mackie dress that was worn by the one-and-only Madonna at the 1991 Academy Awards.
The white strapless beaded dress featured a fitted silhouette with silver sequin detailing along the sweetheart neckline. Carpenter paired the gown, which was acquired by Tab Vintage, with some drip that included a diamond choker, matching drop earrings, and a smattering of rings. Even her white manicure was bedazzled to match the iconic look.
The star's big, bouncy blonde curls were similar to Madonna's 'do from the Oscars and channeled Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. In 1991, Madonna paired the gown with gloves, a fur shawl, and a massive diamond necklace and earrings.
The singer, who released her album Short n' Sweet on August 23, is performing at tonight's show and is nominated for six awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of Year for "Espresso."
Carpenter's good friend and mentor Taylor Swift is also in attendance at tonight's event. The pop star leads the pack with 10 nominations. When speaking with Variety, Carpenter opened up about her relationship with Swift, calling the superstar one of her "best, best friends."
“She’s just such a gangster with all of it," she said. "No matter what people are saying, everything that I’ve ever seen her tackle, she’s done so with grace. The posts about me having to ‘ask for her permission’—no. She’s one of my best, best friends, and we grab dinner or text and catch up like you would with your best friend.”
Last year, Carpenter wore a Vera Wang gown featuring a sheer tulle skirt and a bedazzled corset. She paired the look with platform heels and her signature bangs with a few face-framing strands.
