The Drew's News co-host received a birthday message from his late mom's best friend in honor of his 45th birthday on Tuesday.
Ross Mathews received an extra sweetest birthday surprise on Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
The Drew’s News co-host was discussing this week's headlines with host Drew Barrymore when she revealed they had a special gift in honor of Mathew’s 45th birthday.
“Ross, we have a message from Boni, your mom’s best friend who I know is like a second mom to you,” Barrymore said. “We love Boni and thank you so much for doing this. Take a look!”

Mathews’ mother, Gay, died of breast cancer in 2020 and, last year, the pair dedicated the talk show’s cancer awareness episode in her honor. He also paid tribute to his late father on the 20th anniversary of his death in this January.
Mathews became visibly emotional and put his hands over his face as he watched the clip. “I’m Boni, I was Ross’ mom Gay’s best friend for 40 years,” she said. “And I know if they were here, they would be so proud of everything — well, they always have been — but they would be so proud of where you are, Ross, and what you’ve accomplished, and the kindness that you’ve shown. That’s all your mom wanted for you boys is to be kind, be yourself.”
As she spoke, childhood images of Mathews were depicted onscreen, including one image of him wearing a pink scarf, matching gloves, and heart-shaped sunglasses. “Anyway, I just wanted to wish you happy birthday, and many more,” she added. “And just tell you that I love you and keep doing what you’re doing. Hope to see you soon.”
Mathews took a moment to compose himself after the video, placing a hand over his chest and fanning himself. “That was so beautiful,” he said.
But that was only half of the surprise. Barrymore then had Mathews’ husband, Wellinthon García, bring out a birthday cake that featured the photo of him wearing the scarf and sunglasses.
“Rossy, if this isn’t you, I don’t know what is,” Barrymore teased as she looked down at the cake. He replied, “I know. That is me at probably seven years old and look, exactly the same still today.”
As he cut the first slice, Mathews also shared his birthday wish. “To just keep being surrounded by such beautiful, kind people,” he said. “I’m so grateful. Thank you so much.”
Barrymore interjected, “We are here, and we’re not going anywhere.”
Although, actually… “We might be going to commercial break,” she conceded, “but we are never leaving Rossy’s side.”
