‘Riverdale’ Star Charles Melton Wore a Sleek Rose-Gold Chopard Watch to the CFDA Awards

A-listers hit the town in droves for one of fashion’s biggest nights out on Monday.

The 2023 CFDA Fashion Awards took place yesterday at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, and menswear of all sorts was on display. Tom Ford attended in a signature tailored suit and sunglasses combo, alongside names such as viral TikToker Wisdom Kaye, who wore a statement-making Thom Browne outfit. Riverdale star Charles Melton also posed for the cameras in a formal menswear look, but his elegant watch choice is what we were really dazzled by.

The actor paired his velvet double-breasted Ralph Lauren blazer—which he wore over a crisp white button-up with black trousers and leather boots—with minimal accessories, aside from hand tattoos and, of course, a Chopard L.U.C. Heritage Grand Cru.

The 38 mm watch features a tonneau-shaped case crafted from 18-karat rose gold and has a white-lacquered dial with a porcelain-like finish. A closer look at the timepiece shows its black Roman numerals alongside small seconds and date window displays above the 6 o’clock hour marker. Under its hood, the piece is powered by the watchmaker’s L.U.C. 97.01-L mechanical movement. The tonneau-shaped caliber, developed by Chopard in 1997, runs at a frequency of 28,000 vibrations per hour and provides a 65-hour power reserve.

The movement features twin technology, an innovative system that combines two coaxial barrels to the achieve its extreme slenderness of 3.3 mm. Chopard’s website credits this as a “remarkable technical feat.” The timepiece’s 22-carat gold micro-rotor that winds it might be considered another by watch collectors.

Through the chronograph’s openwork caseback, Melton can see its sum of 197 parts and 29 jewels in action. The complicated movement, of course, is protected by a transparent sapphire crystal. A luxe brown alligator leather strap with hand-sewn matching tones and an 18-karat rose-gold buckle complete the piece, now available for $27,000.

Though Melton’s watch stole our attention, one other notable piece on display at this year’s CFDA awards included Lil Yachty’s Patek Philippe Manual Skeleton Ellipse watch. Limited to just 30 examples, the ref. 3880J model features an 18-karat yellow-gold case with a mesmerizing skeletonized dial. The rapper paired it with a classic Thom Browne look and diamond earrings that made for a stylish ivory-carpet moment.
