Bestselling author Rebecca Yarros' newest addition to The Empyrean series hit the shelves on Jan. 21, and less than two weeks later, the New York Times reported a stunning 2.7 million copies of Onyx Storm sold in its first week. This makes the third book in the series the fastest-selling adult novel in two decades, the outlet reported.

Fans of Yarros' Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, the first and second books in the series, have been salivating for the next step in Violet's gripping journey. The books follow protagonist Violet Sorrengail as she explores love in a world of dragon riders, and her adventures are expected to persist into a fourth and fifth novel to round outThe Empyrean series.

The genre is comparatively new to Yarros, who wrote around 20 bestselling romance books prior to The Empyrean series. But the combination of love and magic — her "first loves" — always made sense to her, Yarros previously told PEOPLE.

"I couldn't write the fantasy without writing the romance," she said. "The romance is really what causes you to focus inward on internal conflict and character struggles. And it makes an even richer fantasy when you go back to it."

“I get to balance both, so I honestly can't imagine ever giving either genre up. They each enrich the other so very much that it would be impossible to let either of them go," she added. "Writing contemporary allows me to just let my brain go and really explore internal conflicts. And of course, love, because if it doesn't have love, I'm not interested.”
