'Prison Break' Star Sarah Wayne Callies Reveals Alleged 'Rampant Misogyny' on Set

Sarah Wayne Callies

Sarah Wayne Callies, whose acting career flourished after breakout roles in Prison Break and The Walking Dead, is opening up about her experience filming the former show, alleging that the set was filled with "rampant misogyny."

Callies spoke about Prison Break during her appearance on Rachel Bilson's podcast Broad Ideas, recalling how she was sometimes "the only woman around" on set before saying, "I've had an actor on that show spit in my face."

The allegation shocked Bilson and her co-host, Olivia Allen, and while Callies clarified that "some of the guys were great, and some of them were totally gentlemen," she also said, "I would go home some nights and have to spend an hour talking my husband out of going to hospitalize somebody."

Callies considered the effect of quick fame on someone, saying, "Any fool can handle adversity, you want to test a man's mettle, give him success"—referencing a popular phrase often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln— hinting that Prison Break's success allegedly might have jaded some of the cast members.

She stated that she would go into further detail about the struggles on set on her rewatch podcast, Prison Breaking, saying, "We will get there on the podcast. We will talk about it someday."

Callies noted that her new podcast gave her "the sort of medicine to go back" and look at her experience on the show, both the positives and the negatives, without it sending her "into a spiral."

Prison Break premiered in 2005, and ran until 2009. It was then revived for another season in 2017. Along with Callies, the show starred Wentworth MillerDominic PurcellAmaury Nolasco and Robert Knepper.

Callies' new rewatch podcast, which is co-hosted by Prison Break co-star Paul Adelstein, premiered at the end of January 2024, and they are currently in the middle of re-watching Season 1.
