Prince Harry has long expressed how losing his mother, Princess Diana, when he was a child has, in many ways, shaped the adult he has become. Case in point: The Duke of Sussex previously credited his late mom with helping him understand the importance of mental health, family, speaking one’s mind, embracing different cultures and ideologies, and helping the less fortunate.
And on November 7, he again mentioned his mother in a letter he penned to members of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a British charity that supports children who’ve lost a military parent.
“Each of you carries a unique story shaped by the bravery of a parent who served our country,” Harry began in his message ahead of Remembrance Day, which falls on November 11 and honors armed forces members who have died in the line of duty while serving the Commonwealth.
“I understand, perhaps more than most, the weight of losing a parent at a young age,” the prince continued. “It can be overwhelming and isolating. Yet, in the midst of that heartache, we find strength in the love and memories left behind, and I have seen how communities like yours can offer deep comfort and healing.”
Diana died in a car accident when Harry was only 12 years old and Prince William was 15. The two brothers regularly honor her memory, and remember her every year at the Diana Awards.
“I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the values that your loved ones instilled in you—courage, compassion, and a sense of purpose. These will serve as your guiding light, helping you navigate the challenges ahead,” Prince Harry added in his heartwarming speech.
