The royal baby: your top predictions

The online study was conducted internationally to discover the public’s predictions for the birth of the royal baby. A sample of 2,975 people aged 18 and over from the U.K., U.S. and Australia were asked to predict the child's sex, name, weight and who the godparents will be.

Results showed that the majority (54 per cent) of respondents think the child will be a girl (this was highest in the U.S. at 60 per cent), and 43 per cent think the new royal will be a baby boy. Just three per cent are predicting twins for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Overall, 48 per cent of respondents are predicting the new bouncing baby royal will be born at a healthy six to seven pounds.

The future monarch's moniker

While the Australian and U.S. respondents tended towards more traditional names for a boy, such as George and Edward, the U.K. result was surprising. The name Spencer come out on top with 30 per cent of Brits saying it was "very likely" to be chosen by the royal couple. This could be an indication of the love the British people still have for Diana - with Spencer being her family name. However, they were more traditional when it came to female names in the U.K., with Elizabeth and Victoria being the favourites. However, Diana was the popular choice among Australian and U.S. respondents.

Other more traditional picks were Katherine, Anne and Margaret for a girl and Charles, William and Henry for a boy. Some survey participants opted for less traditional names such as Adele and Rihanna. Although it's difficult to imagine any future monarch sharing a name with a racy Barbadian songstress!

Godparents: who and how many?

On the tricky subject of godparents, Prince Harry (60 per cent) and Pippa Middleton (35 per cent) were clear favourites among survey participants across the three countries. Other likely candidates are Prince Andrew and Prince Charles. Interestingly, a few celebrity names popped into the list, including Elton John (1 per cent overall). The Beckhams appeared on the UK list and Kim and Kanye even made an appearance thanks to U.S. respondents, although it seems unlikely that we'll being seeing any of them acting as guarantors of the new royal's spiritual upbringing.

It's expected the royal baby will have a number of godparents - with Princes William and Harry both having six, including cousins, uncles and close friends of their father, Prince Charles.
