After watching the fictional story of how the Pop-Tart was invented on Netflix, it’s safe to say that many of us have the toaster pastry on the brain. While Pop-Tarts is busy releasing new Crunchy Poppers and limited-edition Trat-Pop boxes in honor of “Unfrosted,” fans have been busy scouring the stores for their favorite flavors.

It’s no secret that brands discontinue products frequently and for a myriad of reasons. Sadly, just because you loved the peach cobbler Pop-Tart, it doesn’t mean it was popular enough to keep it stocked on shelves.

However, it feels like a different story when Pop-Tarts discontinues a fan-requested flavor after bringing it back from the Pop-Tarts grave once before. And that seems to be exactly what happened for the Frosted Grape Pop-Tart.

Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts Discontinued Again

“@PopTartsUS did you discontinue [the] grape flavor AGAIN?!?!” tweeted Evil Ken in April.

Pop-Tarts’ official response was simply, “It’s time for other flavors to shine.”

“Heartbroken. I swear y’all said it was back for good,” Evil Ken responded.

Why, yes, Evil Ken, they did—let us take you back.

What Happened To Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts?

Pop-Tarts’ Frosted Grape flavor was one of the original frosted flavors released in 1967. It has a storied history of being an on-again-off-again product, but it really hit its stride in the ‘90s. However, Kellogg’s eventually discontinued the flavor completely in 2017.

“We’re sorry to say, the Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts have been discontinued. We wish we could continue making them for you, but sadly they did not have enough fans,” Pop-Tarts tweeted in November 2017.

After that, fans came out of the woodwork to demand that Pop-Tarts bring back the Frosted Grape flavor—and it worked! In 2022, Pop-Tarts announced that the Frosted Grape Pop-Tart would return.

“Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts are back by popular demand! The nostalgia-inducing flavor returns with the same grape jelly filling, white icing and purple crunch-lets that gave it such a beloved reputation way back when,” Pop-Tarts’ website reads.

And, here’s the kicker, Pop-Tarts promised Frosted Grape was joining the permanent line-up, according to Food & Wine.

Now, two years later, fans can’t find them anywhere.

“They appear to have been "secretly" discontinued. As in still on the website but no longer in stores. My local stores were doing blowout pricing on grape a few months back. I found them at a closeout store last month that usually only has discontinued foods reaching the end of their shelf life,” a Reddit user posted.

Another Redditor agreed, saying they found the Pop-Tarts on shelves in January, but it seemed like an older stocked box.

“Most stores in my area do not have any grape left — but one did! There were only about 10 boxes left, and the sell-by date on them is April 2024. That’s not far off — Pop-Tarts usually have a shelf life of close to a year, so these have been sitting there since last summer most likely; and have not been restocked,” a user posted.

Maybe, even though fans begged for the flavor to return, the sales for Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts just weren’t strong enough. Sadly, we’ll never know why these Pop-Tarts were discontinued again. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from Frosted Grape and Frosted Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tarts, there’s always a chance they’ll make another comeback.
