She’s running a country, gave birth while in office, won over hearts and minds, and apparently Jacinda Ardern also faces the harrowing battle that is attempting to bake a birthday cake from scratch.

Is there anything this woman can’t do?

The New Zealand PM has taken to Instagram to share possibly the most relatable parenting post of any elected leader - the first birthday cake conundrum.

Sharing an image of the iconic Kid’s Party Cakes cookbook, the Prime Minister admitted she was about to undertake one of parenting’s greatest challenges.

“Doing what so many parents have done before me,” she wrote in the image’s caption.

“Waited till baby was in bed before trying to magic up a passable cake for the big first birthday.

“Wish me luck.”

Jacinda gave birth to daughter Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford - who she shares with partner Clarke Gayford - last year, becoming the first Prime Minister in New Zealand history to do so.

Taking a moment out of the busy preparations, the PM thanked the community for their support over the year, referencing her initial comments on her daughter’s birth by thanking ‘the village’.

“It truly takes a village (and someone in said village may get a call if I don’t sort this cake!)” she joked.

A rite of passage

The post attracted thousands of likes and well wishes, with other parents sharing their own memories of first birthday cake chaos.

“My daughters 1st bday cake was supposed to be La la from the teletubbies .. it resembled a deranged teddy bear (sic),” one woman shared.

“My top tip: If the cake doesn’t look like the picture in the book, make a new story for it,” another advised.

“I once made a Thomas Tank Engine cake that turned out to be “Thomas down the mine”.”

“This is #momlife conquering mountains, embodying diplomacy, and waiting til they’re asleep to breathe for a second and then bake up a storm,” another shared.

Others took the time to reminisce over the classic rite of passage for any first birthday - a themed birthday cake from the iconic cookbook.

“Every kiwi kid has to have a cake from that book at least once! A rite of passage. You can do it! (sic) '' one wrote.

Outpouring of support

Many simply took the time to express their admiration for the woman who ran a country and managed to have her first child at the same time.

“Such a milestone - well done you guys,” one fan wrote.

“Happy Birthday Neve! And thank you Jacinda for doing such a fantastic job running this country,” another wrote.
