21 Movies That Could Have Been Way Better But Utterly Dropped The Ball
Have you ever had a movie you were super excited about, only for it to be a HUGE flop?
Reddit user u/Big-Option-9443 recently asked, "What movie is a good example of 'cool concept but poor execution'?" Here are all the titles you might want to think twice on:
1.Eternals (2021)
"I understand the studio's ambition to make something different and epic. But they had to juggle many things: a large cast, so much lore, and world-building without enough time to explore it all. Themes they were trying to demonstrate but didn't have enough time to do so in a meaningful way, along with not enough time to build and develop characters. All of that led to the movie being a mess.
As many people have said, Eternals should have been a big-budget series with at least 10 episodes. That would be enough time to develop the characters and explore the lore."
2.Eragon (2006)
"The books were amazing, the movie not so much."
3.The Purge (2013)
"A lot more could have been unpacked about a society doing the 'free night of crime' thing."
4.Jupiter Ascending (2015)
"Jupiter Ascending was a pleasure visually, but the acting was so bad it ruined the whole movie. Some other cheesy stuff also added to it being meh."
5.Ender's Game (2013)
"The novels are brilliant with really rich lore and there are so many, these could've been what Dune is becoming nowadays. It's a huge tragedy that the first film ruined interest in the rest by fumbling the reveal and not executing on the level it should've because that series could've printed money for at least a decade."
6.The Fantastic Four franchise
7.Jem and the Holograms (2015)
"I was a huge fan of the cartoon series when I was a kid and had high hopes for the live-action movie. They really dropped the ball on that one."
8.John Carter (2012)
"It had all the potential. The actor was good, too. The movie was just kind of meh."
9.In Time (2011)
"I liked the idea of In Time, but the movie wasn't really what it could have been."
10.Hancock (2008)
"The comedy at the beginning was great, but the attempt to introduce a love interest and origin in the second half was a mess."
11.World War Z (2013)
"I'll scream this from the mountaintops. That book was damn near purpose-written to be a 10-part HBO series. The movie WAS really exciting and well-made. The zombies were horrifying and unstoppable. The only problem was that they took the name from the book and just made a different movie."
12.Jumper (2008)
"It's a compelling concept and hints at some interesting world-building, but the actual execution fizzled and fell flat."
13.Yesterday (2019)
"The Beatles tribute film tries too hard to be a rom-com and strays a lot from the main premise in the process."
14.The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
"I'm just gonna say that The Matrix was a masterpiece, but that series went off the rails in parts two and three."
15.Flatliners (1990)
"It seemed like a terrific concept, but the movie was 100% forgettable. I'm speaking of the original, I did not see the remake which I hear is even worse."
16.Tenet (2020)
"Tenet is an AWESOME concept that suffered from being too in-depth."
17.I Am Number Four (2011)
"I loved the books, but the movie could've been done way better."
18.Smile (2022)
"I thought the movie Smile had a creepy concept and was hooked during the first half of the movie. The over-the-top CGI towards the end took me out of it. Why can't horror directors keep things simple if the proof of concept is working? Michael Myers didn't need to morph into a 15-foot-tall monster at the end. He was as scary as he was."
19.The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
"The concept was so freaking awesome that I can't believe the movie turned out to be so lackluster. They could have kicked off a whole cinematic universe. Such a missed opportunity!"
20.A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
"They should've taken more in advance of the horrors and terrors of the first hours of one of the loudest cities in the world. Sadly, they only showed five minutes of it in the movie. They skipped over it."
21.Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
"Star Wars is awesome, but episodes seven through nine made Star Wars not awesome."
