Outlander’s Sam Heughan on That Shocking Finale Ending: ‘There Are So Many Questions to Be Answered — Like, How?!’

If you’re wondering how the theory Claire posits in the finale moments of Outlander‘s Season 7 finale might even be possible, get in line behind James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser himself.

The episode, released Friday, ended with Claire wondering if something truly impossible actually might be possible: Did Faith, Claire’s daughter with Jamie, not die in Season 2 as we’d all believed? (For all the details, check out our Season 7 finale recap here.) So of course we had to check in with Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, for his take on the potentially game-changing shocker.
Claire’s theory “certainly brings up a lot,” Heughan tells me in the video above, shot ahead of his event at 92NY in New York Wednesday. “And without giving away too many spoilers, it certainly does play out through Season 8. There are so many questions to be answered.” He laughed. “Like, how?!”
Though the possibility of Faith’s having survived her premature stillbirth via the supernatural ministrations of Master Raymond is raised in Diana Gabaldon’s Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, it’s more of a “what if?” conversation between Claire and Jamie one night before they fall asleep. Therefore, anything that comes of the Faith story in the Starz series’ upcoming final season will be original to the TV show, much like Claire’s ether-abuse storyline in Season 6.
“Oh my god, at the end of [the finale], I think the fans are going to be absolutely aghast and fascinated and questioning everything,” Heughan says. “Because this is obviously not a book moment. There’s a lot of questions.”
