Nick Viall is sharing how he stays healthy during cold and flu season.

"Eating right, staying active, that's really all you can do," the Bachelor alum, 43, tells PEOPLE. "Sometimes when it's cold and flu season it doesn't really matter what your lifestyle is," says Viall, who has partnered with Mucinex.

Viall's advice comes amidst a rising number of cold and flu cases in the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 18 to 35 million people have gotten sick from the flu since October 2023.

"They call it cold and flu season for a reason because a lot of people will come down with symptoms they don't want to experience," Viall, who's currently expecting a baby with fiancée Natalie Joy, 25. He adds explaining how it is to keep his health in check as a soon-to-be dad.

"I am certainly someone who knows what it's like to be busy with a kid on the way and a show to run," the Mucinex ambassador says. "So when I wake up not feeling my best it's never fun."

It's on days like that that he relies on Mucinex Fast Max Kickstart Severe Cold & Flu. "Other than that, I just try to have a balanced and active and healthy lifestyle. Everything in moderation."

In an interview with Dr. Mandy K. Cohen, MD, MPH, the Director for the CDC, in December he told PEOPLE vaccines are still the strongest way that you can protect yourself from the worst of what these viruses bring. He also added how important it is to stay home if you're not feeling well.

"It's really hard to miss fun family gatherings, I know. But if you're not feeling well, it’s really important to test yourself so you can find out what you have,” Dr. Cohen said, adding that you can get free Covid tests from the government. “We have treatments for COVID and for flu — treatments that could save your life.”

He continued: “If you're on the move and you're traveling and you're in places where there's a lot of folks, [it’s] always good to [use] hand sanitizer — that helps you with not just things like Covid and the flu but the regular cold virus and whatever other things might be circulating out here. And obviously, wash your hands."
