James Gandolfini has died at 51

Sopranos star James Gandolfini collapsed in his hotel room and died at the age of 51.

He was on a family trip to Rome.

The actor's teenage son Michael found him on the floor of the hotel bathroom and immediately called 911, People magazine reported.

Gandolfini, famous for his role as Tony Soprano in the hit HBO series, was rushed to the Policlinic Umberto I hospital at 10:20 p.m., where doctors spent 40 minutes attempting to resuscitate him.

He was declared dead at 11 p.m.

The actor was in Italy to attend the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily as the guest of honor.

He is thought to have suffered a heart attack, although an official cause of death has not been released.

A number of celebrities have shared kind words about the award-winning actor, including John Travolta, Steve Carell, Robin Williams and Olivia Wilde among many others.

Gandolfini is survived by his wife Deborah Lin as well as his son Michael and his 9-month-old daughter, Liliana.
