The Bachelor star Sam Wood landed himself in hot water after using the word 'gay' to describe making a smoothie.

'When Snez isn't in Melbourne with me, I like to make her favourite smoothie to remind me of her,' he wrote in a Facebook post.

'You can call me gay if you want, but I'll go with cute.'

It wasn't long before people voiced their criticisms.

'I hate that the word "gay" is used in such a negative way and used as a put down. Get with the times people!,' wrote one Fabeook user.

'Maybe rephrase the saying 'call me gay'. It's 2016 not 1960,' wrote another.

Sam later apologised for using the term offensively.

'Earlier today I scheduled a post about Snez’s smoothie. Unfortunately this post was added to before going out with a very offensive comment,' he wrote on Facebook.

'This is a comment that was not approved by me and I certainly would never make.'

'As soon as I saw the post go live, I noticed the inappropriate comment and made sure it was removed straight away, which it was.

'I am so embarrassed and deeply sorry for any offense caused and assure you all that this person is clearly out of touch with my views and the positive messaging I’m about.'

He added: 'All appropriate steps have been taken to ensure this will not happen again.

The controversy came just days after Sam and Snezana announced they bought their first home together.

The pair revealed that they bought a $1.6m three-bedroom house in Melbourne, where the couple will live with Snezana's daughter Eve.
