In From the Cold (28th)
It’s hard work being a mum, particularly when you’re actually a bio-engineered Russian spy who is being dragged back into action. Watch this show for a compelling look at this very relatable situation.
The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window (28th)
Dark comedy series starring the great Kristen Bell about a woman who believes her handsome neighbour is a murderer. But is he, or does Kristen read too many crime novels and drink too much plonk?
All of Us are Dead (28th)
It’s a weird Japanese show about a zombie holocaust that seems to take place in a high school. Sounds like a convenient way to get out of that maths test you didn’t study for tbh.
STAN
Brother’s Nest (25th)
It’s a homegrown production starring Shane Jacobson, about two brothers who decide to kill their stepfather. Things do not go according to plan, to put it mildly. Black comedy goodness.
PICK OF THE WEEK
Absolute pearler of a Aussie-made thriller, starring an almost unrecognisable Zac Efron and directed with eerie precision by Anthony Hayes. You absolutely do not want to miss this dark nugget of quality drama.
Lantana (27th)
Speaking of quality Aussie films, why not have a look back at one of the best? This 2001 film - starring Anthony LaPaglia and Geoffrey Rush - still slaps after all these years.
Roadkill S1 (28th)
Hugh Laurie is an absolute revelation in this political thriller about a government minister who is more bent than a dog’s hind leg. So, you know, basically a documentary. Quality stuff.
BINGE
Attenborough: Trials of Life S1 (27th)
David Attenborough returns with another wistful, poetic and absolutely compelling look at the wonders of the natural world around us. Enjoy it with a mouthful of hummus and wine for best results.
Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild Untold Story of Ozploitation (27th)
Absolutely superb documentary about the ozploitation scene of the 1970s and 80s. Yeah, that’s right, Australia has some quality cult films. Watching people like Quentin Tarantino bang on about how great we are is pretty nice!
The Fallout (27th)
Heartbreaking, but superb, drama about a high school student whose life is changed by a school shooting. Stellar lead performance from Jenna Ortega.
Amazon Prime Video
Shane (25th)
Fascinating looking documentary about Aussie cricket Shane Warne. Basically, if you’re even vaguely interested in the myth and legend of ol’ mate Warnie, this is a must watch. Obvs.
Inglourious Basterds (26th)
An absolute classic of a film, possibly Tarantino’s best, and well worth a first time watch or a revisit, particularly if you’re keen to see WWII get a more immediately gratifying ending.
DISNEY+
Marvel’s Hit Monkey S1 (26th)
Marvel’s back with a brand spanking new cartoon about a hitman who is… a monkey? Will this death-dealing simian be a worthy watch? The voice talents of Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Munn suggest so.
World’s Deadliest Snakes S1 (26th)
Exactly what it says on the tin. If you’re keen for some knowledge re: the danger noodles we have so damn many of in Australia, this is the show for you.
Apple TV+
The Afterparty (28th)
It’s a brand new comedy crime show, similar in tone to Only Murders in the Building, featuring a quality cast and some real talent behind the scenes. Could be your new light comedy fix.
Paramount+
The Gilded Age (26th)
Julian Fellowes, the bloke who gave the world Downton Abbey, is back with a brand spanking new costume drama set in 1880s New York City. A great cast, sumptuous production and loads of amazing locations wherein characters can flounce. Your nan’s going to love it.
