Nate Bargatze Rides DoorDash to Super Bowl

Nate Bargatze will star in a Super Bowl ad for DoorDash that might also be seen as a Super Bowl ad for Nate Bargatze.

The up-and-coming comedian, who has seen his profile grow in recent months with two appearances hosting “Saturday Night Live” will enter the Super Bowl advertising roster as a rookie. The ad for DoorDash is the first commercial he’s ever done, and it is likely to dazzle viewers. A teaser for the sport debuted Monday.

A 30-second spot slated to air during Fox’s telecast Sunday of Super Bowl LIX will tout the utility of DashPass, a membership program the delivery company unveiled in 2018. The program helps users save money on their orders, and Bargatze proves to be an authentic spokesperson because he is also a DoorDash cusortmer.

“I use DoorDash regularly. I used it two nights ago,” Bargatze tells Variety during a recent interview. “ I’m only not using it right now because I’m a hotel and then I’ll I’ll be back at it.’

DoorDash is tapping into Bargatze’s growing popularity and it may well need it. Super Bowl LIX will also feature commercials for Uber Eats and InstaCart, putting those companies into a rare three-way category showdown within the same event.

The company believes Bargatze’s connection to its Big Game pitch is an authentic one, and the comedian says he was approached about doing a Super Bowl ad after he did a big about his abuses of DoorDash during a monologue on his most recent “SNL” appearance.

It’s his first swing at Madison Avenue antics. He’s been asked to try advertising in the past, but has declined, he says, waiting for an idea behind it that he felt offered a fun opportunity that seemed to play into his humors and strengths,.

“It’s like, you know making a mini-movie” he says of producing commercials. And while he did bring some of his own humor to the finished product, he found the process very different from doing stand-up comedy. “There’s not a live audience or anything,” he says likening it to doing a pre-taped segment for “SNL.” But it was all still enjoyable, says Bargatze. “I’m in trouble if I ever go to something that’s not going to be fun.”

The comedian is hard at work trying to expand his Nateland production company ,and says fans may see him either in or backing a range of different projects in the future, including stand-up specials and movies. “I want people to go back to the movie theaters. I want you to be able to take your family,” he says of the concepts he’s mulling. “What’s cool about my standup is that here are 12 years olds to grandparents in the crowd.” He hopes to create entertainment that “people watch together as a family” or “go to the movies and takeir their kids.”

He’s had to keep his Super Bowl project under wraps, and even debated whether he should tell his parents (Spoiler: He did). Now, he’s excited for more people to see him in action. “Not a lot of people” know about his Super Bowl ad appearance,” he says. “It’s going to be a big, big surprise that it’s happening, and I can’t wait to see what people think.”
