Cue that un-skippable theme music, because it's time to check into The White Lotus once again. (Seriously, if you skip that theme song instead of bouncing around like an idiot, you can't be trusted.) In the new season, we're following the guests at a White Lotus hotel located in Thailand.
"The first season kind of highlighted money, and then the second season is sex," series creator Mike White said in bonus material from season 2 (via Variety). “I think the third season would be maybe a satirical and funny look at death and Eastern religion and spirituality." Of course, it's also a satire about wealthy people, who can afford to go to a resort as luxurious as The White Lotus.
While the show is an anthology with each season featuring (mostly) all new characters, a new location, and a new death of a hotel guest to figure out, there was some important overlap between the first two seasons, and a character from the first season is returning for the third season. So, it's time to take a walk down mysterious, sexy, dangerous, hilarious memory lane and get all set for season three. Sing it with me now: Wooooo woo woo-woo, woooo woo woo-woo.
What happened in The White Lotus season 2?
Much of what happens in The White Lotus season 2 will probably not be relevant to season 3, given that it's a brand new story that will be separate just like season 1 and 2 were. But, one main storyline could come up again: The tragic demise of Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge).
Season 2 begins with Tanya — who was also a main character in season 1 — arriving at The White Lotus in Sicily to join her now-husband, Greg (Jon Gries), who she met at The White Lotus in Maui. Soon, Greg says that he has to leave their holiday because of his job, while Tanya begins to suspect he is cheating on her.
Tanya then befriends Quentin (Tom Hollander), who invites Tanya to fabulous parties and events, but has, like, a million red flags surrounding him, starting with the fact he pretended a younger guy named Jack (Leo Woodall) was his nephew, when he is actually having sex with him.
Eventually, Tanya learns that Quentin has a connection to Greg and grows suspicious that Greg has arranged for her to be killed so he can get her money. This leads to Tanya's showstopping line, "These gays, they're trying to murder me."
Trapped on a yacht with the murderous gay men — she couldn't say no to a boat party! — Tanya ends up shooting several of them while trying to escape. Then, while attempting to flee on a dinghy, she hits her head and drowns, revealing that she was one of the dead bodies found in the water in the flash-forward in the first episode. Greg is still at large throughout all of this, and Tanya's assistant, Portia (Haley Lu Richardson), is the person who knows Tanya was suspicious of him.
Who is returning from The White Lotus season 1?
Clearly, Tanya is not the cast member from season 1 who is returning for season 3. But, someone connected to her is: Belinda, the spa manager from The White Lotus Hawaii location, who is played by Natasha Rothwell.
In season 1, Tanya befriends Belinda and says that she wants to help her open her own wellness centre. But once Belinda has a business plan ready, Tanya begins ditching her to spend time with Greg. In the end, extremely rich, but even more fickle Tanya decides she no longer wants to help open the wellness business with Belinda, but she does leave her an envelope full of cash.
In the season 3 trailer, Belinda is back, and she makes it clear why she's in Thailand: "I want to learn everything I can and bring the magic back to Maui." Will this be for her own spa or for her work at The White Lotus? Will she mention Tanya? Will she even make it back to Hawaii? As we know, not everyone survives a visit to The White Lotus holiday. Here's hoping Belinda's fate is better than that of her one-time almost-investor.
