Based on L.R. Wright’s series of novels, Murder in a Small Town stars Rossif Sutherland (Three Pines) as the aforementioned Karl Alberg, a former big-city police officer who, seeking a change of pace, moves to the idyllic town of Gibsons to take over as police chief. After hitting it off with the town’s librarian, Cassandra Lee (played by Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk), Karl struggles to balance his budding romance with the slew of murders that continue to plague the quaint coastal community.
In addition to Sutherland and Kreuk, Murder in a Small Town Season 1 featured a recurring guest cast that included Mya Lowe as Corporal Edwina Yen, Aaron Douglas as Sergeant Sid Sokolowski, Fritzy-Klevans Destine as Constable Andy Kendrick, Savonna Spracklin as Isabella Harbud and Fiona Vroom as Phyllis Diaz.
Murder in a Small Town premiered in September 2024, earning an average reader grade of “B+,” and concluded its eight-episode run in November. Averaging 3.15 million total viewers (with delayed playback), it was Fox’s fifth-most watched non-sports program this fall — and broadcast’s least-watched new, non-CW drama.
Murder in a Small Town is the fourth freshman broadcast series to earn a renewal, following Fox’s Universal Basic Guys, CBS’ Matlock and NBC’s St. Denis Medical.
