Mum's money-saving Woolworths hack stuns: 'Wow great tip!'

There’s no doubt everyone is feeling the pinch at the petrol pump right now, with prices skyrocketing.

So when one woman shared her tip for saving eight cents per litre when she filled up her tank, others naturally wanted to know how she did it.

Mum-of-four, Lauren from Newcastle in New South Wales told Yahoo Lifestyle it was super simple to get the really good saving.

Lauren explained that Woolworths shoppers receive a four cents per litre discount voucher for every $30 spent in-store. This automatically saves to her Everyday Rewards card.

When she then purchases Woolworths fuel and spends $5 in store, she receives an additional four cents off per litre, creating a total discount of eight cents off per litre.

When she used the promotions together, it effectively gave her a double discount!

Lauren said it worked best for her to buy two, two litre bottles of milk for her family.

“You can use it on anything worth $5. So if they don’t have milk I might purchase chocolates for the kids or chewing gum if they have a deal on,” she said. “I do it once a fortnight on payday.”

Lauren also shared her hack on a budgeting Facebook group, where her post quickly racked up over 200 comments from others keen to give it a try.

“Basically fill up with fuel at a Woolies petrol place, scan your rewards card and buy two bottles of two-litre milk,” she wrote.

“The purchase gives you eight cents off fuel per litre which effectively gives you free milk!”

Surprisingly, others hadn’t caught on to the hack just yet, but were delighted at the impressive saving.

“Wow, thanks for your tip! I was in there the other day & I saw someone buying milk & using her card & the sales assistant said isn’t this a great idea? I wasn’t sure what she meant? Now I do!” One happy shopper said.

“I must be living under a rock… I had no idea this was a thing!” Added another.

How to make the most of it

However, some questioned whether the saving was actually worth it, adding it depended on the cost of fuel where they lived, where they purchased milk and the type of car they drive.

“It depends on the car you are filling up. It's not worth it with my Barina. But if I'm filling my Landcruiser it’s a different story,” one person explained.

“This only really works if the fuel price is also competitive, my local Woolworths fuel is 15cents a litre dearer than my local united,” commented another.

But the trick to getting the most out of this hack was making it worthwhile. For example, some said they waited to fill up a full tank of fuel, or filled up two cars at once to make the most of it.

The petrol price also made a difference, with some saying they waited until the price dropped to increase the saving.

It works at Coles too

Those who were already taking advantage of the hack shared how they make it work for them, revealing it not only works at Woolworths petrol stations but Coles too.

“I get bread milk and toilet paper at Coles express so spend $20 and give an extra 10c off combined with my other two dockets I always then get 18 cents off,” another shopper confirmed.

“I do this with the toilet paper as well (Shell/coles express for me). It’s great because the cost for the items are the same as they are in the supermarkets themselves,” added another.

“I do this when I fill both tanks in my Prado (otherwise I don’t get the full amount of the milk off) The woolies petrol near me is often the cheapest decent fuel in my area too,” said a third.

Those with a Flybuys card said they also had the option of saving the points to their card to make purchases later rather than take the fuel offer.
