Mindy Kaling’s 20-Somethings Hulu Comedy Gets Series Order As She Re-Ups Warner Bros. TV Group Overall Deal

Hulu has handed a series order to Not Suitable For Work, a half-hour, single-camera comedy from Warner Bros. Television. Additionally, Mindy Kaling, the series’ creator and executive producer, has renewed her big overall deal with Warner Bros. TV Group, Deadline can reveal exclusively.

The project, fka Murray Hill, was taken out at the start of 2024, garnering interest from multiple buyers before landing at Hulu after a bidding with a script-to-series commitment. Kaling’s frequent collaborator Charlie Grandy (Velma) serves as executive producer and showrunner.

WBTV signed Kaling and her Kaling International banner six years ago in a very competitive situation as she left her longtime NBCUniversal home. While terms were not revealed back then, Deadline reported at the time that the WBTVG deal was for six years and worth about $8.5 million a year.

As studios do with their top talent whom they want to keep, WBTVG approached Kaling about a renewal months before her current pact was to expire in May 2025, reaching an agreement on a multi-year renewal last month, sources said.

While the marketplace is nowhere near the overall deal bubble of 2019 that saw prices skyrocket, studios continue to put a premium on writer-producers like Kaling who have proven that they can originate and shepherd multiple series at the same time. Going forward, she will continue to develop and produce series exclusively for WBTV.

Since moving to the Warner Bros Discovery-owned studio, Kaling has co-created/executive produced several comedy series, The Sex Lives Of College Girls on Max; Running Point, starring Kate Hudson, which premieres on Netflix next week; and Not Suitable For Work. She also executive produced the studio’s animated comedy series for Max Velma and is executive producing multi-camera comedy Zarna, which landed a rare these days pilot order at CBS.

Not Suitable For Work explores the next stage in young people’s lives after high school, which Kaling chronicled in her hit Netflix/Universal TV comedy Never Have I Ever, and college, the setting of The Sex Lives of College Girls. It centers around five work-obsessed twenty-somethings striving for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness in Manhattan’s most glamorous neighborhood, Murray Hill.

Kaling and Grandy, who also is under an overall deal at WBTV, executive produce with Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment.

This marks Kaling’s third series for Hulu following The Mindy Project, which relocated to the streamer after three seasons on Fox, and the romantic comedy series Four Weddings and Funeral. Kaling, who today is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is repped by CAA, 3 Arts and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

Not Suitable For Work joins Hulu Originals’ roster of live-action comedies that includes one returning series, Only Murders In The Building, as well as two upcoming ones, Glen Powell’s Chad Powers amd multi-camera sitcom Mid-Century Modern.
