Legendary rapper MF DOOM has died at the age of 49, his family have confirmed in a statement.
The star, who is responsible for some of the most beloved hip-hop albums ever, died on October 31, 2020, his family said, though a cause of death was not revealed.
“The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for,” his wife Jasmine wrote, alongside a photo of the rapper.
“Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off. Thank you for showing how not to be afraid to love and be the best person I could ever be.”
Rhymesayers, one of the many labels he worked with throughout his career, also shared the news, writing: “With heavy hearts, we share these words from MF DOOM’s family.”
Some of his biggest hits include ‘Mm.. Food’ and ‘Madvillainy’ with Madlib. He released his last solo album Born Like This in 2009, but had continued to collaborate with other artists over the past decade.
As the news spread across social media fans were quick to share their shock and tributes.
“Rip doom, still listen to this album to this day man,” one person wrote.
“RIP my brother and soar the skies with the other angels. You will be truly missed,” was another tribute.
While many shared their shock that another loss just snuck in before the end of 2020.
“2020 had to dunk on us one more time on the way out... just why?” was one response.
“Smh 2020 giving one last middle finger. What a terrible year,” another agreed.
