Meghan Markle revealed her family’s 4th of July tradition, which originated on her second date with husband Prince Harry nearly a decade ago.
“Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate. Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition,” Meghan, 43, wrote via Instagram on Friday, July 4, of their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. “Happy Independence Day! May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes.”
The carousel post featured three photos, which kicked off with a snapshot of Funfetti cupcakes. Half of the sweet treats were decorated with white icing and a face made out of blueberry eyes and a strawberry mouth. Meanwhile, the other half of the desserts were topped with red, white and blue frosting and featured a chocolate cookie that displayed a peace sign.
In the second picture, Meghan and Harry, 40, looked blissfully in love. The family patriarch smiled at the camera as he wrapped his arm around the former Suits actress, who flashed a wide smile while nuzzling her face into Harry’s.
The final picture was seemingly a photo of the cupcake that Harry gifted Meghan on their second date. The treat was covered in white icing and a blue sprinkled trim with the words “4th of July” written in red icing.
Earlier in the day, the With Love, Meghan, star shared a video of herself making a 4th of July charcuterie board for their holiday festivities. The platter was filled with delicious finger foods, including strawberries, plums, raspberries, cherries, watermelon, blueberries, blackberries and an array of specialty meats, cheeses and bread.
“Red, white and blue … and easy to do! Happy 4th, friends 🇺🇸 Be safe, have fun ❤️🤍💙,” the Duchess of Sussex captioned the video.
Harry took fans along on his second date with Meghan in his 2023 memoir, Spare. The royal swooned over the former "Archetypes” podcast host’s ensemble – a “pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes.”
“She was aglow. I stood and said, ‘I bear gifts.’ A pink box. I held it forward. She shook it. ‘What’s this?’” Harry wrote in the book.
The text read, “Cupcakes. Red, white, and blue cupcakes, to be exact. In honor of Independence Day. I said something about the Brits having a very different view of Independence Day from the Yanks, but, oh well.”
Meghan and Harry tied the knot in May 2018 and expanded their family when they welcomed their son, Archie, one year later. Lilibet joined the brood in June 2021.
