Yahoo Lifestyle Meghan just gave this everyday hairstyle a chic upgrade
The Duchess of Sussex has perfected the art of the updo (or at least, has a hairstylist who's nailed the craft).
From low chignons to a power pony, Meghan's hairstyles often expertly marry the polish required for formal events with her cool, Californian vibe to keep it from veering too prim and overdone.
On her trip to the Invictus Games with Harry this week, Meghan returned to her go-to ponytail, this time with a modern beehive effect that not only leans into the sixties hair trend that's been proving popular this year, but also elevates an otherwise basic hairstyle.
Meghan originally attended the games in Duesseldorf wearing her hair down in waterfall waves, before sweeping it up into a ponytail. It's safe to assume she has a hairstylist on standby, but if she doesn't, it appears the duchess has some hidden hairstyling talents (our ponytails don't look half as chic when we're trying to keep cool in the heatwave).
Meghan's beehive pony is a great way to add volume and silhouette to the style. The key lies in gently backcombing to bring texture and height – without looking overdone. "Add some subtle back-combing on the top and crown sections and spray some Hair By Sam McKnight Modern Hairspray at the roots," recommends Mark Smith, senior stylist at Nicola Clarke at John Frieda Salons. For the duchess' sportier look, position the ponytail just above the occipital bone but below the crown, and secure with an elastic.
Those with fine hair will benefit from a healthy amount of volumising cream at the blow-dry stage. "Apply it directly onto the roots, then lift roots with a brush before blow-drying the hair upwards," says Smith.
The beehive pony is a great trick for extra-fine hair as it cheats the volume. "You can elevate a simple ponytail by opting for a middle or side part (like Meghan's) instead of no parting. You can also pull some wispy pieces from the hairline for a softer look," adds Eugene Smith, senior stylist at John Frieda Salons.
