Star's awkward wardrobe malfunction on live TV
For most a nip-slip on live TV is the definition of a nightmare come to life.
That’s exactly what happened at last night’s ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) awards, when the US women’s soccer team - Reign FC - won the Best Team award.
An elated Megan Rapinoe - captain of the recent World Cup champions - leaned in for a sweet kiss with her partner, Sue Bird, but inadvertently showed off a bit more skin than she’d intended to.
The soccer star’s dangerously low-cut tuxedo jacket gaped open for a few moments as she celebrated, with the live footage going directly to air to the horror of broadcaster ABC news.
Where most would shrivel in embarrassment however, Megan barely batted an eyelid, going on to deliver a joyful acceptance speech.
The award was presented by Sandra Bullock who didn’t censor her support of the team’s push for equal pay, prefacing the win with a supportive statement.
"All those in favor of equal pay, say aye," the Oscar winner said, before announcing the team as the winners.
Captain of the national women’s soccer team, Megan is a two-time World Cup champion, an Olympic gold medalist and an outspoken advocate for LGBT rights.
So it was no surprise that the staunch feminist and inspirational sportsperson didn’t let a little thing like a nip-slip faze her.
In fact it’s in keeping with statements she’s made in the past about embracing the female body.
A history of not giving a damn
“Free the nipple, I’m all about that!" she told Sports Illustrated when she became the first openly gay woman to grace their Swimsuit Issue in May this year.
The historic shot features Megan posing in a completely sheer, nude swimsuit, so embracing the nipple is nothing she’s shied away from in the past.
Her and partner Sue, who is herself a professional basketball star, also famously posed nude in the ESPN Body Issue.
Looks like the sporting legend isn’t afraid to practice what she preaches, whether by choice or by accident.
