Homemade 'McNuggets' recipe goes bonkers online

Home isolation has likely seen many of us attempt to become better cooks in the kitchen, and the need for something yummy to try has seen one young chef’s video go bonkers online.

The 19-year-old, who shares recipes of his creations on Youtube and across social media, has gone absolutely viral with a recipe for a homemade version of an absolute favourite - McDonald’s chicken nuggets.

Joshuah Nishi shared the how-to in a video called 'The coveted McNuggets' on TikTok, and it’s since been viewed over 27 million times.

28 June 2019, Germany (German), Berlin: A young woman eats from a cardboard box of Chicken McNuggets, taken at a McDonald's branch. The fast food chain McDonald's wants to produce less plastic waste. For example, desserts are to be sold in the course of the coming year in more sustainable packaging "almost without plastic". Already this year plastic holders for balloons would be abolished, McDonald's announced. From 2021 they will no longer be allowed to be sold in the EU - as will disposable cutlery and plates and plastic straws. And the recipe is pretty straight forward.

Joshua starts by cutting chicken breast into small pieces, before he blends the chicken in batches.

“You can use a grinder if you have one, but I don’t have one I’m guessing a lot of you don’t have one,” he says.

Then he adds salt and pepper - a very important step he says - before shaping the nuggets.

“The key to shaping your nuggets is to keep your hands wet so it doesn’t stick to you,” he explains.

Then you want to freeze them for two hours, before moving on to coating them in the ‘dry’ and ‘wet’ mixes.

Dry mix:

  • Flour

  • Cornstarch

  • Onion powder

  • Garlic powder

  • Salt

  • Pepper

Wet mix:

  • 2 eggs

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

Finally, Joshuah says to fry the nuggets for two minutes on each side making sure they don’t stick to each other.

In the four weeks since first posting the video, plenty of people have shared their thoughts on the recipe, with some even saying the end result is “better than the real thing”.

“I just made this and it's one of the best things I've ever made,” one person commented.

“I remade them, they were so.. so.. YUMMYYYYY YESS SAAAH,” was another enthusiastic response.

Of course, if this all seems like too much effort, McDonald’s Drive Thru is still open for business.
