Matthew Perry Remembered by ‘Devastated’ Friends Co-Stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer

Matthew Perry’s five Friends cast mates have addressed — or at least, started to — the loss of their beloved co-star in the form of, appropriately, a joint statement.

Perry died on Saturday after his assistant found the actor unresponsive in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home. Initial speculation that he had drowned has not been confirmed, although TMZ reports that there were no drugs found at the scene and foul play is not suspected.

On Monday evening, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer reacted to Perry’s death with a brief, joint statement, to People.com.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family,” the quintet’s statement begins. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”

“In time we will say more, as and when we are able,” the statement continues. “For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world.”

Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind Friends, issued a statement late Saturday: “We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

Other Friends co-stars paying tribute to Perry include Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice, the on-again-off-again girlfriend of Perry’s character Chandler Bing. “What a loss,” the actress wrote on Instagram late Saturday. “The world will miss you Mathew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Paget Brewster, who had her own romantic arc with Perry on Friends in Season 4, wrote on X (fka Twitter): “I’m so very sad to hear about [Matthew Perry]. He was lovely to me on Friends and every time I saw him in the decades after. Please read his book. It was his legacy to help. He won’t rest in peace though… He’s already too busy making everyone laugh up there.”

Friends co-creators/executive producers Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with series EP/director Kevin Bright, also issued a somber statement following Perry’s passing: “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.” (Click here to read their full tribute.)
