Matthew McConaughey Points Out the 'Elaborate Scheme' Going on at the NFL in Genius Uber Eats Commercial (Exclusive)

“Why does watching football make you so hungry? Wonder no more,” McConaughey says in the Uber Eats ad co-starring Christian McCaffrey and Jerry Rice

Matthew McConaughey is about to turn viewers on to a new conspiracy theory.

PEOPLE got a first look at the new Uber Eats NFL commercial starring the Dazed and Confused actor and football favorites like Christian McCaffrey and Jerry Rice.

McConaughey puts on his True Detective cap for the ad campaign — which will air during Thursday Night Football on Sept. 26 — as he tries to prove a football theory to the San Francisco 49ers running back.

“Why am I still hungry?” McCaffrey ponders as he and McConaughey are gathered around a TV.
The actor quickly replies, “Because you’re watching football. The whole game is basically an elaborate scheme to make you buy more food,” he pauses, whistling and gesturing to McCaffrey’s spread of Uber Eats takeout. “And it’s working.”

McCaffrey is not convinced so McConaughey elaborates. “Dude, think about it: turnovers, pancake blocks, scrambles,” he lists off. The NFL star interrupts him, “Come on, McConaughey!” but the Dallas Buyers Club actor mimics his tone back saying, “Come on, McCaffrey!”

McConaughey doesn’t skip a beat before continuing with examples: “Jabrill Peppers, man? C.J. Ham? Slather on some Jerod Mayo and you got yourself a sandwich.” He adds: “Refrigerator Perry was not his real name.”

“You’re being serious,” McCaffrey says in disbelief, but McConaughey doubles down. “Yeah, they got you where they want you,” he says and points to the screen where a player was doing a “feed me” gesture in the end zone. McConaughey snorts and adds, “C’mon man. Didn’t you go to Stanford?”

Another football legend plops down on the couch beside McConaughey: Jerry Rice. And he is not empty handed.

“And what are you eating, Jerry?” McConaughey asks him in a leading tone.

The retired San Francisco 49ers player responds in between bites, “Rice.”

“Jerry’s eating rice,” McConaughey says mockingly, turning to McCaffrey.

Off-screen, McConaughey and McCaffrey admit to being believers of the connection between football and food — though maybe not as adamantly as the actor pretends in the commercial.

“Why does watching football make you so hungry? Wonder no more,” the Pantalones Tequila founder says of the spot. “Food’s for football, and football’s for food. Don’t believe me? Just ask Uber Eats.”

McCaffrey shares a similar sentiment: "On the field, I’m all about football – off the field, I’m all about food. Is that a connection? Maybe. Is it why I’m working with Uber Eats? Yes.”

“I’m excited to team up with Matthew McConaughey, Jerry Rice and Uber Eats to bring the thrills of fall football and food to fans all season long," he adds.
