Marvel's “Infinity War” and “Endgame” directors could return for “Avengers 5” and “6”

Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly in early talks for the coveted gig.

Endgame no more? Sibling filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, known for directing some of Marvel's biggest blockbusters, could be returning to the company's cinematic universe.

The Russos are currently in early talks for a big MCU comeback behind the camera to direct Avengers 5 and 6, according to reports from multiple trade outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline Hollywood.

Representatives for the Russos declined to comment to Entertainment Weekly, and reps for Marvel didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The brothers made a splash by directing Chris Evans in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was followed by the more ambitious Captain America: Civil War two years later. In light of their continued successes, Disney handed them the reins to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the latter becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time.

It makes sense that Marvel would consider their tried-and-true hitmakers to take over Avengers again, given all the talk in the press about recent misses and diminishing box office returns with the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. However, their involvement is not official at the moment. Shawn Levy, who's directing Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in this year's only MCU movie release, Deadpool & Wolverine (out July 26), was also reportedly up for the job.

Marvel swiftly got to work revamping plans for its next two Avengers movies, which were initially going to focus on Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror as the central villain. Avengers 5 was announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, set for release in 2026, and Avengers 6 was dubbed Avengers: Secret Wars, after the famous Marvel comic book arc, and set for release in 2027. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton was once in talks to direct Kang Dynasty, but eventually dropped out.

Since Marvel fired Majors from the film-and-TV-spanning role after he was found guilty in his assault trial, plans have changed. Benedict Cumberbatch, the resident Doctor Strange, recent seemed to suggest that he'll be returning to film Avengers 5 next year.

Disney is gearing up for a grand Hall H panel presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, so we'll see if plans firm up for a big, splashy announcement.
